AFC Youth Development update

"While we are all aware of what is going on in Scottish football we must also stay focused on the future and what the club really stands for. Behind the scenes we have been a leading example in the youth development area and often this work goes unrecognised. This is excellent use of our limited resources and we must not forget the valuable contribution this makes to the club and the community"

Keith Wyness, Chief Executive

Aberdeen?s Under 12?s were given a taste of the big time over Easter as they represented the club with great distinction during their four-day trip to England.

The youngsters enjoyed the thrill of travelling on the first team coach as they were given the same type of experience as is savoured by the first team squad for away days.

Matches were set up against the cream of the Premiership?s Under 12 sides - Arsenal, Spurs, Reading and Leeds United providing the opposition for our kids.

And they served the club proud ? beating the Gunners 3-1, fighting back from 2-0 and 3-2 down against Tottenham to win a thriller 4-3, losing narrowly 4-3 to a bigger, stronger Reading side then rounding off their tour in style with an excellent 4-1 win at Leeds United.

In addition to playing, the lads were guests at West Ham against Ipswich and Spurs? home clash with Leeds in the Premiership.

But maybe the highlight of the four days came at Leeds when, courtesy of former Dons boss Roy Aitken, the lads met up with Robbie Keane after United?s morning training session. Robbie now has a new fan club based in Aberdeen after taking time out to dazzle the boys with his ball skills and sign autographs!

This trip highlights for us all at Pittodrie just what a good job the men charged with bringing through young talent are doing. To go down to England and beat sides from their own age group at clubs of the pedigree of Leeds, Spurs and Arsenal shows what a talented group we have here at Pittodrie.

This season we have all marvelled at the skills of McNaughton, McGuire, the Youngs and Mackie ? all boys who have developed through the ranks here at the club.

But we also have to look to the future to ensure the conveyor belt of talent doesn?t dry up.

Youngsters like full back Stuart Smith, who skippers the Under 12?s, keeper Russell Omand, centre back Martin Skinner and midfield lynchpin Marshall Thomson could be players we?re cheering on in the not too distant future. Certainly one name who?s destined to be on our lips after scoring 10 of the 14 goals down south is Chris Maguire. Mention must also be made of David Templeton and Martin Hoy ? both of whom won high praise from friend and foe alike.

What we as fans must do now is back the club - not just the players we have now but the players we hope we have coming through in the future to challenge them for places in the first team.

To ensure these promising youngsters are given every opportunity of making it in the big time, support the club as it supports them and nourishes the talent which we hope will see Aberdeen rise again to the very top in the Scottish game.
