foyle cup disappointment

05 July 2003 20:27

The Aberdeen U14s had to endure the bitter disappointment of losing on penalties this afternoon in the final of the Foyle Cup. The young Dons were defeated 4-3 on spot kicks by the Red Devils (Manchester United) after the match had finished 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Aberdeen started the game the stronger team and took the lead after only 9 minutes when Michael Paton scored, continuing his tremendous form during the tournament. The boys then held out until the stroke of half time when the Red Devils snatched an equaliser.

The Dons battled well for the rest of the game but could not find the spark needed to break the deadlock. Just like their semi final yesterday the game went to penalties, but unfortunately this time they lost out. The Devils did miss one spot kick but sadly for the Dons it was not enough, as two of their efforts failed to find the target.

Youth Development coach Chic McLelland was philosophical after the game. ?That?s the way football goes sometimes. The boys competed well throughout the final but it just wasn?t meant to be.?

There was some consolation for the team and in particular Michael Paton (pictured) as he was named U14 player of the tournament.

Earlier in the day the U12?s finished their tournament on a high when they beat Home Farm (Leeds United) in the 3rd/4th play-off game. The Dons dominated the match throughout with goals coming from Sam Urquhart (2), Aron Taylor and Scott Ross.
