'crewe cut' to pieces by dons

Hurlingham Park was the venue for this weekend's match and the Dons turned in an excellent performance to run out winners by 8-1. The score was impressive but what was really pleasing on the day was the quality of play from an Aberdeen side who were looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Several changes saw Ritchie, Aberdein and S.Cairns come back in to the starting line up. Arno retained his place up front after two goals last week.

The game started quite evenly, Crewe played some nice one touch stuff and their number 7 looked particularly lively. Aberdeen started to get some momentum and it was nice to see them constantly try to pass the ball through the midfield. The first goal however came from that Rob Roy classic the long Smollet kick out, the high bounce, Arno beat the keeper to the ball and nodded it over him, then slotted it home, 1-0.

The Dons added a second within minutes. A free kick on the left looked ideal for a curling delivery to the back post. Nobody could have envisaged just how much curl Urquhart would get on it and just like Barry Nicholson against Utd the other week it veered round and nestled perfectly in the back of the net, 2-0.

It was an onslaught now. Attack after attack from the Dons and goal mouth incidents aplenty. Aberdein curled a free kick just over. Two or three great balls in to the box just went begging and several last ditch blocks kept Crewe in it. Not for long though, another through ball saw the keeper race to the edge of his box, he headed it clear, Jelinek played it inside to Ritchie who from 25 yards lobbed it over the keeper in to the unguarded net, 3-0.

Aberdeen had a great spell after this, stroking the ball around and really playing nice football. The kept getting in down either wing and the fourth goal exemplified this style of play, after about 10 passes in midfield Stewart from right wing back came inside, played a lovely reverse ball to Goeff Aberdein down the wing, he took a touch and swung it in perfectly evading the keeper and landing plum on the head of Stewart who had continue his run in to the box, 4-0 at half time

It was all about keeping up the momentum in the second half, goal difference could be important this season and the Reds had ground to make up on Norwich in this respect. To be fair standards never dropped and Stewart and Ritchie both came close to a fifth. Stewart finally got the fifth when his cross cum shot from the right went right in the top corner giving the keeper no chance. Aberdeen brought on Crutchlow and Campbell as they went for more goals. It didn't take long until it was six, Cairns who had a great afternoon up front getting the goal he deserved when he burst free on the left and slotted home low for the sixth.

P.Morrison came on for Cairns and the seventh duly arrived. Birthday boy Aberdein who should have scored with a gaping goal moments earlier was given a chance to atone after a knock down from a corner and duly obliged turning home inside the 6 yard box. It was one way traffic and Arno added the eighth. Morrison's flick on was deflected high in the air by a defender and typical of Crewe's luck on the day landed plum on the head of Arno who headed home unchallenged at the back post. Obviously feeling a bit sorry for the Crewe lads the ref contrived to let them have a consolation goal, the centre forward almost caught a forward ball, laid it back to the left back who took it down with his hand too, nothing given, a long ball forward and their striker looked to be 10 yards offside, he was allowed to go through and score. Even the opposition admitted it had been more than a bit dodgy. No real harm done though and it finished 8-1 to the Dons.

MOM = Not a bad player on show, Arno and Cairns were excellent up front. Defence untroubled but in midfield Jelinek and Ritchie shone and share the award this week.

Team : Smollet, Urquhart, Stewart, Gunn, Duguid, Davidson, Aberdein, Jelinek, Ritchie, S.Carins, Arno.
Subs = Campbell, Crutchlow, Morrison
