By Aberdeen's last wartime season (1916-1917) Anderson had established a reputation as a fine goalkeeper who could pull off "clever" saves that often kept his team in matches or ensured that they did not lose as often as the struggling side might have done.

During the First World War, George served in the Royal Artillery then returned to play for the Dons till the end of season 1921/22 with his last first team appearance against Raith Rovers taking place on 3rd of January 1922. His six Pittodrie seasons saw George playing for the first team a total of 213 times.

Anderson was a successful businessman in Aberdeen, with a confectionery business based in the city's Mount Street and served as a town Councillor and magistrate in the City for a number of years. Always fond of his home village, he named his house "Haydon Villa". He joined the Pittodrie board of directors in the 1920's where he remained involved until season 1945/46 when he became Managing Director of Dundee FC.

George Anderson brought considerable success to Dundee in the early 50's, including two League Cup successes and remains a popular legendary figure in their history.
