Signed from Glasgow Celtic for an undisclosed fee, Gary was in immediate European action with the Dons and opened his scoring account in his second match - away to Siroki Brijeg. he quickly became an influential regular in his first seasonand continued this in his second season until he suffered a serious head knock in the League Cup Final in December 2018. On his return from that injury he played a few more matches but suffered further injury which meant that he missed the last quarter of the season. From the opening of the transfer window in January 2019 it became clear that GMS would likely move on from Pittodrie at the end of his two year contract, with New York City being favourite for his signature. After a prolonged silence after the close of the season, during which time Manager Derek McInnes continued to try to keep him at Pittodrie, news came on 24th June that he had finally put pen to paper in New York.
