Ness was part of the Barnsley side that contested the 1910 FA Cup Final, losing in a replay 2–0 to Newcastle United. He moved to Sunderland in 1911 wher he was an FA Cup runner up again in 1913 FA Cup Final when Sunderland were beaten 1–0 by Aston Villa. He won a league winners' medal when Sunderland topped the table.
In 1916, Ness joined the 42nd Battalion of the Royal Highlanders, Black Watch and trained at Perth.
In May 1920, he joined Aberdeen but never made it out of the Reserves, where he played a total of 11 matches.
