At 16 years of age, Ron signed as an appretice professional with West Bromwich Albion, but didn't settle there so returned home and joined Ashington FC as an amateur. It was when playing with Ashington that he was spotted by Aberdeen.
After giving him a two-week trial period, and an appearance in a public trial match, manager Tommy Pearson decided to give Ron a contract. Ron was a time-served welder when he joined the club as a full-time player.
After leaving the Dons, Ron again returned to Ashington and later played with Morpeth Town and Bedlington Terriers.
When he was with West Brom, Ron played in a tournament in Amsterdam, where he came up against another future Don - Jimmy Wilson, who was with Newcastle United at the time.
