new women students union

WOMEN STUDENTS' NEW UNION. OPENING CEREMONY TODAY.

The Aberdeen University women students' new Union at 52 Skene Terrace is to be opened this afternoon. The building is a commodious one, standing in its own grounds, with a large lawn in front of the main entrance, and faces Gilcomston Parish Church. On the other side of Skene Terrace is a large lower garden, which will be open to the students. A short flight of steps leads to the main entrance, and from the hall access is got to the superintendent's sitting-room, a large dining-room, and a housemaid's pantry, where teas are to be made for the students. On the first floor are a cloakroom, a lounge in which the students can study, and the library, which overlooks the lawn. There also a large drawing-room on this floor. The top floor is reserved for bedrooms for the staff, and several spare bedrooms for the use of visiting students from other Universities. In the basement is a kitchen, and plentiful bathroom accommodation for the benefit of students in lodgings.

Girls who desire to do any washing will be allowed the use of part of the basement for this purpose and for drying the clothes. This arrangement will continue until such time as the laundry is erected. The building is artistically decorated throughout, the floors being laid with linoleum of a bluish tint, while the walls are of a grey shade, and the ceilings done in white. Meantime the Union is fitted out with temporary furnishings, but is to be furnished in keeping with the colour schemes of the various rooms. The building is served by a central heating system, which also supplies hot water circulation for domestic purposes. The Union is open to students from 10 in the morning until 10 at night with the exception of Wednesdays, when it will be closed in the afternoon. Food will be obtainable within the building, except on Wednesdays and Sundays. The superintendent of the Union is Miss Deane.
