In 2004 when UEFA was marking its fifty years of existence, one of its celebratory acts was to produce a limited-edition football print. The numbered copies, titled “When Grandad Was a Lad” and signed by the artist were distributed to all member associations and the clubs that had won European trophies since 1954.
The original painting, by British artist Mackenzie Thorpe, was created in a nostalgic style, and the lithographic print had an edition of 170 copies. Aberdeen, winners of the 1983 Cup Winners Cup and European Super Cup, were presented with number 69 mounted in a gold painted frame. The print, which is 59 cm by 55.5 cm, was originally put on show in the Gothenburg Lounge, but has since been moved to an alcove beside the staircase leading to the Directors Box.
