The ground was opened in 1997, after Peterhead's old ground Recreation Park was sold off to supermarket company Safeway. The standard of the facilities at Balmoor was one of the main reasons why Peterhead were elected to the Scottish Football League in 2000, along with Elgin City.

There is no railway station in the town, the nearest being in the
Aberdeen.. The bus journey takes roughly an hour, with buses
leaving Aberdeen at quarter past and quarter to the hour (services
260 via Ellon and 263 via Cruden Bay). From the Back Street bus
stop, Balmoor is a simple walk. Turn left onto Queen Street,
and walk straight up to the top of the hill, and you'll find
Balmoor to your left.
Travelling from the South:
Head north from Aberdeen on the A90 for Peterhead. Take the second
exit off the roundabout at McDonalds on the outskirts of Peterhead
onto the Ring road.Turn right onto West Road at the Howe o' Buchan
roundabout passing the Co-op Superstore to the next roundabout.Turn
left onto Windmill Road.Turn right at next roundabout onto Balmoor
Terrace.The ground is on your right.
Travelling from the North:
From Banff follow A98 for Fraserburgh.Turn right onto A950.Go straight
across the Howe o' Buchan roundabout onto West Road passing the
Co-op Superstore to the next roundabout.Turn left onto Windmill
Road.Turn right at next roundabout onto Balmoor Terrace.The ground
is on your right.

There is parking
for around 200 cars at the ground, with further parking available
at the Balmoor retail park.
