match report 1916-17 fixture list
Div 1 (Old)
Heart of Midlothian 2 - 0 Aberdeen
Kick Off:    Noble, Mercer
Attendance: 7,000
Venue: Tynecastle, Edinburgh
There were about 7000 at Tynecastle, Edinburgh, for the match between the Heart of Midlothian and Aberdeen, and they saw the home team gain a creditable and well-deserved victory. The Hearts had the better of each half, but, thanks to the better physique of the Aberdeen defenders, it was not until the last minute of the first half that a shot from Noble brought out a goal. Mercer, who was a prominent figure throughout, both in defence and attack, got the Heart's second goal well on towards the close of the game.

Mercer had much to do with Heart of Midlothian's win over Aberdeen. The center-half was in his best form, both in defence and attack. Cail lead Aberdeen well, and with the Aberdeen defence solid Hearts had difficulty and making any impression. Main almost counted with a deceptive shot. Not long before the interval, noble opened the scoring for the homesters. Aberdeen continued to have a good share of the game in the second period, and it was the last minute before Anderson was again beaten, this time by Mercer.
