Charity Cup Final
28/04/1894

Orion 5 - 3 Victoria United
Kick Off:
Attendance: 3,500
Venue: Chanonry, Aberdeen
Chanonry was the scene of the meeting of these clubs to decide which should become the holder of the Aberdeen¬shire Charity Cup. Fine weather favoured the event, and that fact, added to the good object for which the competition is organised, and the expectation - which was fulfilled - of witnessing a keen tussle, had the effect of enticing a crowd of between 3000 and 4000 spectators. Mr Frank Watt, Edinburgh, was referee, and the teams were: United: Cannon; Thomson, Ririe; Morrice, Stewart, Annand; Turner, Benzie, Clark, Forsyth, Ferries. Orion: Edwards; Ross, Mackay; Wight, Low, Currie; Johnston, James, Gloag, Oppenshaw, Stopani.

From start to finish, the game was one of the best which has been seen this season. Play was fast, well-combined, and well sustained. At half-time the game stood even - three goals each - a score which fairly indicates the play. On resuming, Orion did most of the pressing, but the game was within ten minutes of its close before Johnston with a fine shot added a fourth goal for the reds. A few minutes later Oppenshaw placed the issue beyond doubt by adding another point. The game thus ended: Orion 5, United 3.

The teams subsequently had tea together in the Waverley Hotel. Mr W. Litster, chairman of the Charity Committee, presided, and presented the cup to Mr W, Walker, as representing Orion. A number of toasts were thereafter pledged, including "The Winners," "The Losing Team," "The Referee," &c. Mr William Carnie, in a brief speech, referred in laudatory terms to the great assistance which the charity competition rendered to the benevolent institutions of the city. Several hours were very pleasantly spent. The amount drawn at the gate was £77, and it is expected that the committee will, as the result of the year's competition, have about £100 to distribute among the various charities.
