The 3000 spectators who assembled at Chanonry in the anticipation of a close and interesting game between these clubs on the occasion of their first meeting for the season were greatly disappointed. Throughout Aberdeen were quite overpowered, and they were eventually ignominiously defeated by 8 goals to 2. The teams were: Aberdeen: Smythe; John, Joseph Davidson; Reith, Morran, Thomson; Turner, Henderson, Toman, Gray, Mackie. Victoria United: Sim; Thompson, Ririe; Morrice, Ririe, Annand, Murison, McFarlane, Caie, Forsyth, Clark.
Aberdeen kicked off, and were at once forced to assume a defensive attitude, which they had to maintain with brief intervals during the game. Caie scored the first, goal, and after Aberdeen had paid a brief and fruitless visit to the United's territory, a corner resulted in a second goal to the visitors. Forsyth and W. Ririe had the principal credit of the point. The ball had scarcely been set in motion again, when it was speeding towards the Aberdeen goal, and its course way never stayed till it had been sent through for the third time. The addition of a fourth goal by Caie followed ten minutes later. This had the desirable effect of awakening the Aberdeen players to a sense of their position, and when the ball was again restarted, the spectators were treated to a series of lively tussles in the strangers' half of the field. Trotter [sic] from the extreme right sent in a beautiful shot, which took effect, and thus gave Aberdeen their first goal. Half-time arrived with the scores: United 4, Aberdeen 1.
Despite the heavy odds against their favourites, the Aberdeen supporters were hopeful that they might at least partially redeem their position. But they were disappointed. United quickly added two goals, and thus placed the result beyond doubt. From a corner Toman headed a neat goal for Aberdeen, but the United forwards more than recouped themselves by putting on two at the opposite end. While the game could not be described as generally rough, there was a quite unnecessary display of feeling by certain individuals, and on two occasions players, resorted to their fists - conduct which the referee - Mr Hunter, Montrose - allowed to pass with a reprimand. The game ended?Victoria United, 8 Aberdeen, 2.
