Played at Chanonry, and resulted in a win to Aberdeen by 6 goals to 3. There was a poor attendance of spectators. The teams lined up as follows: Aberdeen: Smythe; John Davidson, Gall; Reith, Morren, Thomson; Turner, Allott, Alexander, Gray, Mackie. St Johnstone: Cunningham ; Syme, A. Robertson; Flinn, Bennet, McEwan; Anderson, McKenzie, Waddell, D. Robertson, Johnstone. Mr James Philip was referee.
Playing with a strongish breeze in their favour, in the first half, the visitors quickly asserted themselves, and within the first five minutes they had two good, but unsuccessful, tries at the home goal. Then the ground team took up the running, and Cunningham was twice called upon to defend his charge. He sent the invaders about, and end-to-end play followed. The ground was very slippery, and with a greasy ball play was somewhat inaccurate, especially at goalmouth. Fifteen minutes from the start, Gray scored for Aberdeen. Soon afterwards, Falconer [sic] took the second goal with a low shot that carried the ball in like a flash. A third goal soon fell to Aberdeen. One of the backs, in kicking out, sent the ball against his partner, and it rebounded into goal. This gave the homesters a lead of three points, but the visitors were not in the least disheartened. For a time the ground team again pressed, and had several tries at goal, Gray, in particular, coming very near adding to the total. At length they were driven back, and the Saints made a determined attack on the home goal, Bennett finally scoring their first point by a beautiful long shot. From the kick-off Aberdeen returned to the attack, and laid heavy siege on Cunningham's charge, but wretchedly bad shooting on the slippery ground in front of goal was mainly responsible for their failure to score. Both ends were then visited several times, and in one of their incursions the visiting team obtained a second point by Flinn, who scored rather easily. Ends were changed with the score standing: Aberdeen 3 goals, St Johnstone 2.
When play was resumed the local men, having the wind now behind them, at once made tracts for their opponents' goal, and in less than two minutes Morren scored with a magnificent kick from near mid-field. The Saints again rallied and harassed the home defence for some time, but the left wing of the home team at length broke away, and, after some neat passing, Mackie registered a fifth point by a smart header. Somewhat exciting work at each end followed, and at length Anderson, after some tricky play, took a well-deserved goal for the visitors. Again the local players asserted themselves, and, swooping down the field, they closed in on the Perth goal. Gray sent in a beauty which struck the bar. Mackie caught the ball as it rebounded, and after eluding two of his opponents he banged it through, thus scoring the sixth point for Aberdeen. Shortly after this Turner had to retire from an injury to his leg, but play was still fairly equal. There was no more scoring, however, and the final result of a pleasantly contested game was: Aberdeen, 6 goals; St Johnstone, 3 goals.
