Orion 3 - 1 Arbroath
Kick Off:    Stopani, Thom, Benzie       ?
Attendance: 2,000
Venue: Cattofield, Aberdeen
Cattofield was visited by upwards of two thousand spectators - this too, in spite of the bad weather - on the occasion of a friendly encounter between Orion and Arbroath, The ground was in a wretched state, and as a consequence scientific play was not in evidence. The composition of the teams was as follows: Orion: Edwards; Ross, McKay; Wight, Low, Currie; Benzie, Gloag, Thom, Leggat, Stopani. Arbroath: McArdle; Clark, Airth; Glen, Christie, Buick; McKenzie, Sinclair, Strachan, Hutton, Wishart. Mr Aitchison, of the Victoria United, was referee.

Thom, who had been changed from the wing to the centre, kicked off for the Orion, but the advance of the forward line was promptly checked, and play settled down in mid-field. For ten minutes neither side was really dangerous. The Arbroath combination was, however, superior, and when at last the strangers got near goal the ball was easily driven through. The point was attributable more to the carelessness of Currie, who failed to clear, than to the deadliness of the Arbroath attack. It was an easy goal, and although Orion struggled hard to retrieve themselves it was some time before they succeeded. Benzie, who had been playing a steady game on the wing, centred capitally, and Stopani, rushing in, landed the equalising shot. No sooner was the ball safe than the whistle sounded, with the half-time score standing: Arbroath 1, Orion 1.

The second half had barely begun when Thom concluded a brilliant charge by shooting the ball past McArdle. The spectators were completely taken by surprise at the suddenness of the change of lead, and encouraged the local team to further effort. Orion responded in fine style. This time Benzie was the scorer, but the point was "lucky," for the ball appeared to strike him accidentally and roll through the goal. Arbroath seemed to realise that their prospects were somewhat gloomy, but they did not lose heart. Luck, however, was against them. By this time darkness had set in, and the players could scarcely be distinguished as they rushed hither and thither. The ball was quite invisible to the spectators. Low was the best man on the field in the first half, but, unfortunately, through an injury to his side, was almost useless in the concluding period. Final result:Orion 3, Arbroath 1.
