Gershon Cup
10/11/1894

Victoria United 3 - 0 Orion
Kick Off:    Clark, Forsyth, Clark
Attendance: 5,000
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
An exceedingly poor game between these teams resulted in a win to Victoria United by 3 goals to nil. The contest was the first of the series of Gershon cup-ties, and took place on the United's Ground at Victoria Bridge. There was an attendance of between 4000 and 5000 spectators, the "gate" amounting to upwards of 60. Mr Russell, Cowlairs, Glasgow, was referee.

Orion won the toss, and Victoria United had to play with the sun in their faces during the first half. Mr Gershon, who was loudly cheered, kicked off the ball. Gloag caught the pass, but sent the leather out. From the throw-in the right wing of the ground team had a pretty run up and laid heavy siege on Orion's goal. Clever defence frustrated their attempts, however and although they continued to press for some time, a corner was their only reward. Orion's first attack was vigorous and sustained, an attempt by the ground team to break away being thwarted by Ross. From a long kick by Ririe, Clark secured the leather and had a brilliant run through the opposing ranks. He sent the ball well in, and Edwards kicked out rather softly. The United forwards again took possession, and after one or two attempts the sphere was rolled through in a surprisingly easy fashion. Play was now faster and poorer than ever. The spectators shouted themselves hoarse in their intense excitement, and the players tumbled about in all directions. After a little Thom had to retire owing to an injury to his shoulder, and Orion were left with ten men. Up to half time, however, they held their own, and ends were changed with the score standing: Victoria United 1 goal, Orion 0.

When the game was resumed and it was seen that Thom was still unable to take his place, the hopes of the Orion supporters sank to zero. Probably they went lower still when, within a minute of the recommencement Forsyth scored a second goal for the United from a fine centre given by the right wing. Another good charge on the right resulted in a third goal, Clark taking the pass and scoring rather neatly.
