ABERDEEN (3 goals), VICTORIA UNITED (2). For the second time in succession Aberdeen on Saturday surprised friends and opponents alike by gaining a most unexpected victory. Even the supporters of the Chanonry club were despondent in regard to the result, while the backers of Victoria United were quite confident. As it proved, however, both parties were disappointed - Aberdeen agreeably so. The match, which was played at Chanonry in fine weather, was witnessed by between 2000 and 3000 spectators. The teams were: Aberdeen: Smyth; John Davidson, Gall; Reith, Joseph Davidson, Thomson; Turner, Taylor, Mackie, Gray, Allot. United: Sim; Anderson, J. Ririe; Morrice, W. Ririe, Annand; Murison, McFarlane, Caie, Forsyth, Smart.
Play began quietly. During the opening stages it was mostly in Aberdeen territory, but the defence of the home side was strong in all departments. Smyth, in particular, played a brilliant game, and the harder he was pressed to the greater advantage did he show. The United had the best of matters, but it was not until the game was half an hour old that McFarlane, with a shot from close quarters, opened the scoring. Aberdeen had several rushes, but want of cohesion in the front line made the work of the opposition easy. Before half-time Forsyth put another goal to the credit of Victoria United. With the strangers two goals to the good at half-time, the home supporters began to lose the little hope which they had entertained, for, judging from the way in which the Aberdeen men had been shaping in the opening period, it seemed as if Victoria United would have little difficulty in doubling their score in the concluding half.
The prospect became even worse when Turner hurt his leg, and had temporarily to retire. On his return, however, Aberdeen went off with a dash, and about ten minutes after the opening the right winger, lame as he was, scored with a neat shot. This success evoked a burst of enthusiasm, which was redoubled when a few minutes later the same player added a second point, and placed his club on an even footing with their opponents. Amid great excitement, the Aberdeen forwards again swarmed round the strangers? goal. Thomson "ducked" Mackie in the goalmouth, and the referee (Mr Baillie, St Bernard, Edinburgh) awarded a penalty kick - a decision which created satisfaction or discontent among the spectators according to the club they supported. Mackie took the kick, and neatly scored. Twenty minutes now remained to play. Victoria United strove hard to regain the mastery and Aberdeen to keep it. Aberdeen played a defensive game, and they succeeded, for the whistle, amid great excitement, blew with the scores: Aberdeen 3, Victoria United 2. Naturally the result created great enthusiasm among the Aberdeen supporters.
