The visits of the Edinburgh University Association XL are usually looked forward to with much interest by Aberdeen footballers, but the attendance at Cattofield on Saturday was disappointing. It was no doubt due. in some measure to the bitterly cold weather, and to the counter attractions. The teams were Orion: Edwards; McKay, Ross; Wight, Low, Currie; Gloag, Benzie, Fraser, Leggatt, McBain. Edinburgh University: Rust; White-Jones, Brooks; Dodson, Stewart, Menzies; Hutcheson, McGowan, Murray, Champion, Farquharson. Mr Simpson, Victoria United, was referee.
Kicking off uphill, and against a stiff breeze, the Orion forwards made several attempts to reach the Edinburgh goal, but strong kicking by the backs kept them at bay. While lacking in combination, the strangers' front line showed some good individual play, and their fine speed gave them a great advantage. A free kick near goal afforded them an excellent opportunity, but the ever-watchful Edwards saved in time. The period was well spent before the superiority of the Orion enabled them to open the scoring. This Gloag did by a neat shot. Half-time arrived with the score unchanged.
With wind and incline in their favour, Orion at once became aggressive. A chance was missed by Leggatt, and this gave the Edinburgh forwards an opportunity of breaking away. Murray, who showed fine form throughout, carried the ball unaided from midfield, and on getting within range equalised with a pretty kick. This spurred homesters and strangers alike, and the struggle for supremacy became exceedingly interesting. Orion missed several chances; the forwards, with one or two exceptions, were in poor form. it was not until ten minutes from the call of time that Low gave the home team the lead. Shortly afterwards Rust stopped a fast shot from Gloag, but before he could get rid of the ball he was driven across the line, and another goal to Orion thus resulted. A few minutes later the whistle sounded, with the scores: Orion 3, Edinburgh University 1.
