A friendly match was played between these clubs at Montrose. Orion won the toss, and elected to play towards the east goal, with the wind at their back. The visitors pressed at the outset, and on several occasions Alexander, the home custodian, was forced to kick out. Montrose tried hard to shake their opponents off. The right wing of the visitors was the most prominent, and had several dangerous runs. After several futile attempts to score the Orion forwards, after a fine run, got in front of the uprights, and the inside left banged the ball into the net. A minute later they repeated this performance. Montrose then played better, and Thornton, with a brilliant run, brought the leather within shooting distance, and after a smart tussle in the vicinity of Orion's goal Cobb scored the first goal for the homesters. The teams crossed over with the scores standing: Orion 2, Montrose 1.
On resuming Montrose at once assumed the aggressive, and after a few minutes' play equalised. Thereafter Montrose had the better of matters, and soon put on a third point. Then Orion forwards put in some fine play, and Stopani with a low shot equalised, Alexander making a feeble attempt to save. Play then became faster. Ultimately, from a corner, Montrose again scored, and although Orion tried hard to equalise they failed to do so, and the game ended: Montrose 4, Orion 3.
