These clubs met in a friendly at Cattofield. The teams were: St Andrews University - Macaffer; Seath, Gunnson; Menzies, Masterman, Macnaughton; D, Dawson, J. Dawson, Brown, Macmillan, Johnstone. Orion - Morrison; McKay, Ross; Wight; Low, Currie; Gloag, Benzie, Thom, Leggat, Stopani. Mr R. Edwards acted as referee.
Before the game was a minute old, Gloag, from a splendid pass, drew first blood. The opposing half-backs were no match for the clever tactics of the home team, and play was confined to the students' territory. Stopani, with a swift shot, landed the ball in Macaffer's hands, and while the latter was on the eve of returning it, Leggat with his usual agility rushed ball and player through, and thus obtained the second point for the Stripes. The strangers broke away with a splendid piece of combination, and J. Dawson made a capital run to the Orion's goal. From a pass Johnstone scored the first, and what proved to be the students' only, goal. No further scoring took place in the first, half, and ends were changed with the groundsmen leading by 2 goals to 1.
The second half opened with play confined to midfield, but at length the Orion invaded the strangers' territory, and had it not been, for the strong defence at back the students must have retired badly beaten. As it was, however, Low notched the third point for his team. "Give and take" was then pretty much the order, until Benzie sent in a swift shot which baffled Macaffer, and snatched the fourth point for the Stripes. Result: Orion 4, St Andrew's university 1.
