On Saturday afternoon this game was played at Aberdeen in the seventh round of the Qualifying Cup ties. There was a large turnout of spectators. The teams were as follows: Orion - McBean; Gordon, Ross Wight, Low, Currie; McFarlane, Leggat, Thom, Dawson Hogg. Motherwell - Gordon; Stewart, Neil; Thomas, Ostler, Stewart; Goldie, Maxwell, Miller; Edgar, Galloway. Referee: Mr Black, Forfar.
The Orion, having won the toss, chose to play up the hill with a slight wind in their favour. At the start neither of the teams displayed their usual form, but the Orion were the first to pull themselves together, and Motherwell's defence was sorely pressed after this. Stewart and Neil, however, were equal to the occasion, and repelled every attack. Edgar and Galloway had a smart run along the left, which brought relief, and Miller tried McBean with a good shot, which he managed to save. Orion were now working very well in midfield, but were rather slack at goal. They were soon rewarded, as after strong pressure McFarlane beat Gordon with a low shot. After this the play brightened up a bit, and Motherwell were kept pretty much on their own ground, but latterly the forwards got away, and it was now Orion's turn to act on the defensive. Here Motherwell had hard times in not equalising. The wind was greatly in Orion's favour, but they failed to improve on their score before the whistle sounded half-time, when the game stood: Orion one goal, Motherwell nil.
For a short time after resuming the Orion held the upper hand: and it looked serious indeed for the Motherwellites, when a foul was given them half-a-dozan yards out. The chance, however, proved unfruitful for the Orion, as the ball passed into the net untouched. The Fir Parkers, settling themselves to their work, now severely pressed the home defence and Goldie soon put on the equaliser. Then came the struggle for supremacy. Motherwell seemed much better able to hold out than their northern brethren, and, but for the splendid saving of McBean, their custodian they would have been utterly routed. Galloway put on a second goal for Motherwell, and after this the Fir Parkers adopted defensive tactics, but the visitors nearly scored, Gordon with difficulty getting rid of the ball from amongst a crowd of players. Just on call of time a corner fell to Motherwell, and a goal resulted, the game thus ending in a victory for Motherwell by 3 goals to 1.
