There was a very large attendance at the Recreation Park, Peterhead, to witness the encounter in the semi-final tie of the Aberdeenshire Cup between the Peterhead and the Victoria United. There was a strong wind blowing from end to end of the pitch, and the Peterhead, being unfortunate in the spin of the coin, kicked off against the breeze. The homesters made a promising start, a smart run on the left looking ominous for the visitors. By powerful kicking the United relieved, but they were some time in overcoming the Peterhead backs, and Thornton shot over. The Aberdeen men had the best of matters and attacked for a spell, but Mackie was invulnerable, saving cleverly and with fine judgment. Getting possession of the leather, Masson ran along the Peterhead right wing, and, with a swift shot from the touch-line, he almost scored. Findlay turned it aside but indifferently, and a second shot was only saved at the expense of a corner. Fouls were frequent on the visitors' side. In spite of repeated attacks and clever play by Caie, Thornton, and Ritchie, they could not score. Up to half-time neither team had scored.
Peterhead resumed with the wind behind them, and several corners fell to their lot. Breaking away, the United gained a corner. This was cleared, but promptly returned, and, after some passages in front of goal, Thornton opened the scoring with a good overhead kick. Towards the close Peterhead made desperate efforts to equalise, but time was called with the Victoria United in the majority of one goal to nil. The game was well contested, the pace being hot. The teams were: Peterhead - Mackie; Cordiner, Milne; Cowie, Marr, Davidson; Masson, McKechnie, Smith, Clark, Shiach. Victoria United - Findlay; Gillespie, Allan; Morrice, Davidson, Stopani; Murison, Burnett, Caie, Thornton, Ritchie.
