The Victoria United and the Orion met at Chanonry in the final round for the Aberdeenshire cup, and after a stubborn fight the game ended in a draw of two goals each, thus necessitating a replay on Saturday next. It was estimated that there was an attendance of over 5000, the drawings amounting to £110, being £3 more than the previous record, which was made in 1895 when the Aberdeen and Orion met in the final. The Aberdeenshire cup competition was instituted in 1888, when Dr Maitland Moir, who was then honorary president of the association, presented a cup which ultimately became the properly of the Aberdeen. In 1889, the association decided to purchase a trophy which would he played for every year. It has now done service for seven seasons, exclusive of the present one, and during that time the United have won it four times - three times in succession - the Orion twice, and the Aberdeen once. The Victoria United and the Aberdeen disputed the custody of the cup last year, and by 6-2 the Torry team gained possession of it. The last occasion on which the United and the Orion met in the final prior to Saturday was in 1894, when the United triumphed by 6-3.
It would be no exaggeration to say that at least 4000 of the 5000 spectators who went to Chanonry on Saturday expected to see the Orion prevail. And certainly the records of the respective teams this season would have quite justified that expectancy. The teams lined up as follows: United - Findlay; McConnachie, McNeil; Stopani, Davidson, Annand; Murison, Morrice, Forsyth, Thornton, Ritchie. Orion - McBean; Gordon, Ross; Wight, Low, Currie; A. McFarlane, M. McFarlane, Thom, Leggat, Hogg. The game was commenced well up to time, and the conditions were slightly in favour of the Orion in the first half, as the United had to play against a strong sun. The first half, contrary to expectation, ended in favour of the United by 2-1. The play of the teams, however, did not warrant more than a draw. During the first ten minutes the Orion were continually at their opponents' end, but the defence of the latter was excellent. As the game advanced the United pressed more, and for several minutes they kept the Orion defence active. The excitement of the spectators at this stage ran very high. With ten minutes of the period to go, Morrice scored the first goal amid a tremendous outburst of cheering. Several minutes before the sounding of the whistle the United were awarded a penalty kick, and Ritchie, who took it, neatly placed the ball at Thornton's feet, and that player sent in an effective shot. This further success on the part of their opponents roused the Orion, and Thom, just on the call of half time, scored the first goal for his club. Early in the second half A. McFarlane brought the game equal by an excellent shot. Towards the middle of the period an unfortunate accident occurred, necessitating Wight's removal from the field. At times the play was very exciting, and the game ended - Orion 2, United 2. Mr Banks was an excellent referee.
