match report 1897-98 fixture list
Forfar Athletic 5 - 2 Victoria United
Kick Off:
Attendance: 0
Venue: Station Park, Forfar
A Northern League fixture was down for deČcision between these teams at Station Park, Forfar, but as the ground was in very soft condiČtion the tie was declared off and a friendly game played. Play in the first period was equally divided, and at half time each had scored a goal. In the second half, however, Forfar managed to add four additional goals, while the Aberdeen men only managed another point.

Vics journeyed to Forfar but found the ground so covered with ice that a League fixture was out of the question, and a friendly - good old friendly - was substituted. The forward line underwent considerable alteration. Byres and Ritchie on the right, Watt centre, and Henderson and R. Ritchie, left, forming the attack. Booth opened the scoring for the homesters, but United were not long in equalising, Vics had decidedly the best of matters towards the close of the first half. Half time, however, arrived with the scores equal, 1-1.

On resuming, Vics were soon down at Forfar's goal, and experienced hard lines in not adding to their score. Athletics brightened up considerably, and before call of time had put on four goals. Vics had a second just before the finish. A wonderfully good game, considering the ground, ended: Forfar 5, Vics 2.

Short Kicks.

Vics gave Watt another trial at centre, but he showed no improvement. The lad undoubtedly has football in him, but he is slow, at times painfully so.
Henderson, we were pleased to see, was again able to don blue.
McIlveny, an ex-Celt, has been secured by the Torry ExecuČtive, and he takes centre position against Aberdeen on Saturday.
The team to play against the Whites will not be selected until to-night. Bar the inside left, it is Allan ; Allan and McNeill; Dundas, Moffat, and McKenzie; Black, Henderson, MIlveny, R. Ritchie.
