At Cattofield on Saturday in, amid miserable weather, but before a large turnout of spectators, the Orion and Victoria United teams met in the second round of the Qualifying Cup. The teams were:- Orion: Ritchie; Thomson, Ross; Currie, Low, Esplin; Prophet, Wilson, Burnett, Brebner, Fitzpatrick. Victoria United: Murray; Kilgour, Craig; Drummond, A. Murray, R. Ritchie; Knowles, Duncan, Burnett, Ferries, G. Ritchie. Mr. Maclauchlan, Clyde, was referee.
The United won the toss, and the Orion started off down the hill. The opening exchanges were fairly even, but gradually the Orion showed an improvement in their play, and the United had to act on the defensive. Wilson and Fitzpatrick tested Murray with splendid shots, but the United goalkeeper proved equal to the occasion. Towards the close of the first half the Victoria United team began to force the play, and as the result of a brilliant run up the left wing, Ritchie opened the scoring with a swift shot.
On resuming, the United having now the hill in their favour, were mostly on the aggressive. Orion had an occasional look in, but failed to score.
