Aberdeen succumbed to one of the biggest shocks in Scottish Cup history, defeated by Darvel on a night to forget for the Dons.

There were three changes to the Aberdeen side beaten at Tynecastle last Wednesday night. Anthony Stewart returned from suspension, Patrik Myslovic made his first start for the club and Ryan Duncan his second. Bojan Miovski, Jonny Hayes and Graeme Shinnie all started from the bench. Craig Samson was on the bench in place of the cup-tied Tom Ritchie while there was a welcome return from injury for Callum Roberts.

Darvel made one change to the team that won 6-3 at Kilwinning Rangers ten days ago, William Robertson coming in for Andy Stirling.

Aberdeen started brightly, Duncan in behind after three minutes and cutting the ball back for Duk but from a dangerous position, he missed making a proper connection and the chance was gone. Duncan was in again a minute later, Leighton Clarkson playing a pass inside the full-back, Duncan driving a shot into the side netting from a tight angle.

It was the Ryan Duncan Show in the opening exchanges, checking inside after eight minutes and curling a left footed shot wide of the post from just outside the box. Darvel had their first look at goal in the 12th minute, Truesdale firing off a low shot through a ruck of bodies, Joe Lewis down well to his right to gather at the foot of the post.

The home side were in front on 19 minutes. Ylber Ranadani was beaten by Truesdale who hoisted it to the back post where Coulson's attempted header clear was worked back into the middle, Kirkpatrick hitting a shot on the swivel from the edge of the six yard box. It took a thick deflection off Hayden Coulson and bobbled inside the post.

Three minutes later, McGowan went in the book for a horrible lunge on Ross McCrorie on halfway. Craig Truesdale joined him on 32 minutes after another kick at McCrorie. Eadie then went through the back of Duk without getting a card, for a far worse challenge.

Stewart was up above everyone to meet a Duncan free-kick on 36 minutes but he couldn't keep it down and the ball looped harmlessly over the bar. Clarkson was the first Aberdeen man to get cautioned for a foul on Truesdale after 42 minutes. From the free-kick, Caldwell got free but headed over.

HALF-TIME: DARVEL 1 ABERDEEN 0

Bojan Miovski and Vicente Besuijen were on for the Dons at the break, Myslovic and Kennedy replaced. Kirkpatrick was booked early on for scything down Coulson.

Besuijen had the first effort of the second period, lashing a shot over the bar from 30 yards in the 55th minute. Darvel responded with a ferocious shot from McShane that Lewis had to be sharp to save.

Things should have been level on 57, Duk pulling the ball across the six yard box. Duncan came flying in at the back post with a low shot, Truesdale producing a fine save with his outstretched leg to deny him. Darvel made their first switch after 62 minutes, Robertson replaced by Stirling. Hayes followed him on three minutes later, on in place of Coulson. Kirkpatrick was the next to make way on 69 minutes, Ferguson his replacement.

The equaliser looked for all the world as if it had come on 72. Hayes played the ball into the near post, Duk got a good connection on it but somehow, Truesdale found a reaction save to claw the ball away, the ball then being hacked clear in the six-yard box.

Darvel made their last two changes after 74 minutes, Moore and Reilly joining the fray in place of Caldwell and MacKenzie. A minute later, Miovski had the ball in the net, only for it to be ruled out for offside, a controversial decision with Clarkson at least a yard onside as Hayes played the ball forward, Clarkson squaring for a Miovski tap-in.

Another great chance went begging on 78 minutes. Hayes' cross from the left found Duk seven yards out, his first time shot kept out by another reaction save from Truesdale, a third brilliant stop of the night. Roberts was Aberdeen's next change, replacing Duncan with 10 minutes to go.

Hayes caused more havoc down the left in the 87th minute, picking Duk out with a fine cross, but the striker couldn't get enough on his glancing header and Truesdale was able to save comfortably. Another yellow card followed for Davel, Stirling booked for another hack on Besuijen.

Miovski was almost in on 90 minutes, getting a flick on from Duk, but the ball wouldn't come down and it was blocked behind - Miovski was booked for complaining the obvious corner wasn't given.

Four minutes of time were added, Darvel keeping the ball in the Aberdeen corner for three of them as the Dons fell to one of the worst results in the club's history.
