EAST STIRLING'S "DOUBLE" AT DONS' EXPENSE.
Having startled the Scottish football world by defeating Motherwell on their own ground, Aberdeen provided almost as big a sensation at Bainsford yesterday by falling to East Stirling, the promoted Second Leaguers, who are second from the bottom of the table.
The "Babes" of the League have been giants so far as the Dons are concerned, their win completing the double at the expense of the Pittodrie men, whom they defeated at home earlier in the season.
DISPUTED GOAL AT BAINSFORD.
Pittodrie Men Show Signs of Strain.
East Stirlingshire registered their second victory of the season over Aberdeen at Firs Park yesterday, as the result of goal that was hotly disputed by the Pittodrie players. The score was 1-1 ten minutes from the finish, and then, following a corner, Kemp turned ball into the net.
The Aberdeen players were solid in their assertion that the home inside-left used his hand, but the referee ignored their claim.
Although there I some doubt to the legitimacy of the winning goal, it must be admitted that the home team merited the points on the day's play. They adapted themselves better to the conditions, and they made better use of the wind in the second half than Aberdeen did in the first half.
It was hard to believe that the Aberdeen teem had beaten Motherwell and Dundee over the week-end. The players were evidently feeling the effects of these two strenuous encounters, for they were tired and lackadaisical in their movements.
First Time Tactics.
East Stirling, on the other hand, banged the ball about first-time, and Aberdeen did not relish these tactics. With the advantage of the wind in the first half, the Dons held the advantage, but there was a lack of spirit about their attacking movements, and the players were inclined to put too much work on the ball.
The half-backs, too, were lacking constructive and penetrative ability, and with the Bainsford defence going into their work without hesitation, the Dons were seldom really dangerous, and Crawford in the home goal was rarely tested.
When East Stirling had the wind behind them in the second half there was a different tale to tell. They went into their work wholeheartedly.
The Aberdeen defence had a gruelling time. Smith was continually in action, and a goal was long overdue the 'Shire when Kemp notched the disputed winning point.
Mills Gets One.
Twenty-five minutes had gone when Mills headed the opening goal from a corner, but East Stirling equalised, also following a corner, only ten minutes later.
Smith, Cooper, and McGill were a fair rear trio, but all three were badly harassed in the second period. Cooper was the sounder back. Smith, who brought off several good saves, sustained an ankle injury late in the game.
The middlemen were below par. Fraser, a sound constructive player, was the best of the three, but even he did not reveal his best form. Falloon was not so prominent as usual, and was frequently erratic with his clearances.
O'Reilly, although he strove hard, never seemed to get the measure of Latimer and Smith and had a poor afternoon.
Moore got too little assistance from his team mates to be as dangerous as usual. McDermid was sprightly in the first half, but, like the other forwards, he was seen to little advantage in the second period. Mills seemed to be suffering more than the others from Monday's strenuous game with Dundee, while Beattie was too slow in setting rid of the ball to be effective.
In a hard-working East Stirling defence. Auchencloss and Crichton did well, while McAulay, Turnbull, and Kemp were most prominent in attack.
