ARCHIE BAIRD'S absence from the Aberdeen team against Partick Thistle made one realise how big a part he had played In the Dons' Cup win over Third Lanark a week earlier. His prompting and thoughtful distribution were missed against Thistle.
This is not written in disparagement of young McNeill. The wee lad from Bridgeton Waverley and his former teammate Joe O'Neil, both showed promise, but the manner in which they tired in the second half showed that the gulf between ?A" Division and ?C" Division standards is a wide one.
O'Neil showed strength in the tackle, but repeatedly lost possession to opponents who came back at him more quickly than he is accustomed to. At the same time he did enough to show he has the ability to go to the top.

The Dons didn't have to play particularly well to achieve their latest victory, but I thought they had the best player afield in Alec Young. The centre half-back could match Walker for speed, and his swift tackling and covering-up brought many Thistle attacks to an abrupt end.
Thistle have some promising material, but the side lacked a general to bring the best out of the youngsters.
