Aberdeen's pre-season got under way at Peterhead's Balmoor Stadium as the Dons faced the third division side in a local "derby". Aberdeen manager Ebbe Skovdahl and Blue Toon boss Ian Wilson were on hand to open the Buchan side's new stand.

The Dons started the game positively and had the first shot of the game in the 6th minute, but Darren Mackie could only fire over from the edge of the area. Mackie was involved again in the 10th minute as he got on to the end of a Ben Thornley cut back, only to see his goalbound effort blocked. The Dons were just inches away from taking the lead in the 20th minute after some good build up play involving Russell Anderson, Darren Mackie and Chris Clark. A long pass from Anderson was flicked into the path of Clark, whose shot crashed back off Pirie's right upright.

Aberdeen were on top and it was no surprise to see the visitors take the lead in the 34th minute. The Dons forced a corner and from Clark's cross, Philip McGuire was on hand to head home from close range at the far post. It was a deserved goal and Aberdeen went close to doubling their lead just two minutes later, but Pirie was able to scramble away Derek Young's shot. The second goal was not long in coming. Ben Thornley released Darren Mackie who showed a lot of composure to slot the ball past Pirie. Thornley himself came close to adding to the Dons lead, but his header was well saved by Pirie in the 43rd minute.

Peterhead were first to show in the second half, but Johnston could only fire over from 25 yards. Aberdeen extended their lead in the 53rd minute. A fine run from Kevin McNaughton saw the youngster's cross deflected into his own net by Peterhead's Mark Slater. The Dons took the foot off the gas a little and Peterhead were quick to benefit as Johnston fired home from inside the penalty area on the hour mark.

Aberdeen came close to re-establishing their 3-goal cushion in the 63rd minute. The ball broke to Darren Mackie, but his shot was held by Pirie. Aberdeen went close again in the 71st minute and it was the excellent Pirie in goal who denied the Dons once more as he kept out Ross O'Donoghue's well struck shot.Aberdeen had a great chance to add a fourth goal in the 85th minute, but Scott Michie could only shoot wide of the right hand post from a good position.

Manager Ebbe Skovdahl was satisfied with the performance, just a week into training. "It was a good game after one week of intensive training. We created a lot of chances although I was disappointed about their goal". The Dons pre-season moves onto Montrose on Tuesday night.
