Dons in historic spot of bother. |
 |
Aberdeen headed to Hungary to record a piece of history they could have done without. The home side went ahead on the night after only 17 minutes despite the linesman flagging for offside. On the hour match Honved went ahead on the away goal rule then added a third in the 67th minute. The Dons were looking down and out until Steve Murray through them a life line with a deflected goal thirteen minutes from time. That goal took the tie to extra time but neither side could add to the scoring. Thus followed the first ever penalty shoot out in European competition and Aberdeen became the first side to be eliminated in this way when Jim Forest missed the Dons third kick. The Hungarian scored to seal the 5-4 win for the home side.
