Rob caused the first flurry of excitement with an overhead effort, then Graham crashed the ball narrowly past after good work by Harper and Forrest. What a let-off for Hearts in nine minutes. A cross from Graham found Forrest, whose shot hit the upright and rebounded into Cruickshank's arms. Hearts forced three quick corners but eventually McMillan cleared the danger with the aid of Buchan, who was master-minding the Aberdeen defence. This was the signal for another Aberdeen offensive, but Clunie was on the line to head away Forrest's try. Rain which had been lashing down stopped, but the ball was playing tricks off the surface. Aberdeen's defence was in trouble when Fleming made a break on the left, but he was pulled up for offside. At the other end a Murray cross landed on the roof of the net and a Harper first-timer just cleared the bar.
First try of the second half came from Winchester, but Clark saved easily, and in the next raid the ex Don completely missed his kick when Fleming set up a chance. Aberdeen were awarded a penalty in 57 minutes when Harper was brought down. Harper hammered the ball into the net.
