Preece spot save clinches final win |
 |
Aberdeen triumphed today in the Bradford Centenary Tournament, but it took a dramatic penalty shoot out to lift the trophy. After neither team could break the deadlock in the 90 minutes the match went straight to penalties and goals from Bird, Hinds, Clark, Sheerin and Hart gave the Dons a 5-4 victory.
The first half of this final was a rather flat affair with no goals and precious little action to report. Both sets of players and even the fans (no doubt nursing a few hangovers) appeared to be out of sorts in the opening period. Aberdeen had a chance cleared off the line from a corner kick and late on in the first half David Preece pulled off a magnificent save to deny the hosts a certain half time lead.
The second half didn't get much better as both teams struggled to make the breakthrough with David Preece on fine form when Bradford had a sniff at goal. There was a sense of inevitability as the game went to a penalty shoot out and it was David Preece who stole the headlines to cap a good performance. The Dons keeper saved the first Bradford spot kick from Ben Muirhead and Bird, Hinds, Clark, Hart and Sheerin kept their nerve to give the Dons a 5-4 victory to cheer the large contingent of Dons supporters in the stadium.
N.B. The official programme covered both days of the weekend tournament
