Leighton Injury Kills Off Cup Chances
Rangers lifted the Tennent's Scottish Cup today, beating Aberdeen by four goals to nil. The Don's task was made so much harder after only two minutes, when ex-Scotland international Jim Leighton was stretchered off with a dislocated Jaw and broken teeth, after an accidental collision with Rangers striker Rod Wallace. Leighton was taken to hospital in Glasgow, and was replaced in the Aberdeen goal by striker Robbie Winters.
Ironically, the first real chance of the match fell to the Dons, a Jess corner nearly connected with Thomas Solberg's head, but the big defender couldn't get his shot on target.
The first real test for Winters came in the 17th minute, when Ukraine international Andrei Kanchelskis hit a long range effort straight at him.

Rangers made the breakthrough in the 34th minute when Albertz played a brilliant free-kick through to Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, and he hit it past the helpless Winters.

Aberdeen were dealt another blow in the 40th minute, when Russell Anderson was taken off after picking up a knock, he was replaced by Rachid Balabed.
There was a full nine minutes of injury time played at the end of the first half due to the injuries of Leighton and Anderson.

Rangers came out in the 2nd half, and within five minutes had virtually killed off the game. Tony Vidmar made it 2-0 after just one minute of the second half with a high shot past Winters, and a superb Billy Dodds header just 2 minutes later made it 3.
After 50 minutes, a Jorg Albertz thunderbolt made it 4-0 and put the game beyond any doubt.
The game fizzled out after that, and the Dons did their best to keep the score down. Robbie Winters made 2 outstanding saves, one from Rod Wallace - he tipped his shot on to the bar- and a late save from a Dodds header, putting it past for a corner.
