Dundee made a creditable appearance in Hume's benefit match at Aberdeen. The result was a draw of one goal each, which is a fair reflex of the play, although Dundee were the better balanced side. A feature of the game was the sound goalkeeping by Lyall and King, the latter especially being brilliant in effecting a double save. Dundee scored first through Hamilton, after King and Hume failed, and led at the interval. In the second half, following hesitation by Lawson, Soye got through for Aberdeen. Best for Dundee were the two Hamiltons, Tait, and Lyall; and for Aberdeen, King, Colman, Wilson, and Travers.

The football season and Scotland commenced yesterday, when play was general in the larger centres. The opening of the season at Pittodrie was marked by a match between Aberdeen and Dundee, the proceeds of the gate being for the benefit of John Hume, the popular left back of the home team. The game, which ended in a draw of one goal each, was witnessed by about 5000 spectators, and, if the play did not reach a very high standard, it might be characterised as highly satisfactory for a first-of-season effort. Call over the play was worthy of a draw, although it should be said at once that Dundee were slightly the better balanced lot, and word in greater Unison than the home players, whose spasmodic efforts lost nothing in the dangerous element.
Aberdeen were the first to assume the aggressive, and Milne had a brilliant left foot effort which hit the crossbar, while Wood followed with an equally good shot, which Lyall saved. Murray was also in the limelight with a fine cross effort, which the Dundee keeper tipped away. At the home goal, King saved in brilliant fashion from Laing lands, and later cleared shots from Wyllie and R. C. Hamilton. He failed to intercept a cross from D. Hamilton, and Hume failing to clear properly, R. C. Hamilton had the honour of scoring the first goal for the season. Following upon this Milne ran half the length of the field, but Lyall saved in great style. After this King brought off a brilliant double save - easily the feature of the match. Wyllie crossed brilliantly, and King tipped the ball away, nearly falling in the effort. D. Hamilton returned, and King recovered in marvellous fashion, and cleared the ball. At half-time Dundee led by the only goal.

Although it is not yet definitely known, it is expected that the sum that will accrue to Hume, the Aberdeen teams left back, from his benefit match will amount to £150. This must be satisfactory to the player, and is a striking tribute to his popularity with the football public of Aberdeen.
