Dons' Bid For Title |
 |
THE championship of the North Eastern League has not yet been decided, as both the Dons and East Fife drew their respective away matches. The Dons have still a lead of four points, and, as the teams have each only two matches to play, the Pittodrie eleven should make certain of the flag against Hibs at Pittodrie on Saturday. The Dons took two points, including the bonus point, from their drawn game at Kirkcaldy.
The Dons were not at their best, but on the run of play should have won. It was evident from the start that the Rovers were determined to prevent Aberdeen playing good football, and were out to stop Mortensen at all costs.
The Blackpool forward was shadowed wherever he moved, and he was often tackled in very robust manner. Consequently he was not seen to the same advantage as in previous games.
Yet it was Mortensen who got the Dons' equalising goal, and a great goal it was. He had been nudged off the ball. He appeared to lose his balance, but he recovered, was round Millburn, the English international back, in a flash, and glided the ball into the only gap visible between other opponents. The ball struck the post, and rebounded into the net. Burnett, the Aberdeen Junior, got the homesters' goal.
The Aberdeen defence made mistakes, but on the whole were masters of the home attack. The half-backs worked tremendously hard, but the attack has often played better.
Ancell the Dons' right winger, received head injury, and had to leave the field ten minutes from the end.
Moodie, the Rovers' goalkeeper, stood between Aberdeen and victory.
