Rangers And East Fife Are Dons' Challengers
SOME time may elapse before the championship of the North-Eastern League is decided, and the re- suit is likely to depend on the final matches.
It may be that the destination of Aberdeen the flag will not be settled until after the Mitchell Oup competition, which commences on May 19.
After next Saturday, Aberdeen Rangers and East Fife, the three clubs who are fighting it out at the top of the League, will each have only one match to play, and, incidentally, each will be played away from home.
The position at present is that the Dons lead the Rangers by two points. It may be that after today's match with Falkirk, the Pittodrie team will have an advantage of four points.
Assuming that to be the case, if Rangers are beaten at Arbroath on Saturday, the Ibrox club could not win the championship, as they could take only three points from their last game
Possibilities
East Fife, on the other hand, are at home to Dundee United on Saturday, and they ought to win. Provided the Dons beat Falkirk today, and East Fife win against the United, that would still leave the Methil team three points behind Aberdeen, with both teams having an away fixture to fulfil. It would be possible for the Fifers to equal the Dons in points, but the latter would have a big advantage on goal average.
It is an interesting situation. but it is more than likely that the week will not see a settlement, as Rangers are bound to make a tremendous effort to beat Arbroath, and thus remain as strong challengers to the Dons to the last.
It Was Too Easy
With the assistance of Lowe and McCall of Hamilton Accies at centre-half and outside-left respectively, and Stan Williams as leader of the attack, Aberdeen beat Dundee United with the utmost ease, as the score of 6-0 indicates.
The United were made to look a very moderate team. Th eDons played well within themselves, and were never really tested.
Aberdeen maintained a good standard of football throughout. There was a fine understanding between all divisions, and, if the Dons were not a brilliant combination, they were certainly far ahead of their opponents, who were much unballanced. The visiting half-backs were too busy in defence to be of any great service to their forwards.
Guests Pleased
For Aberdeen Johnstone, Cooper and McKenna were a very reliable trio. It took Taylor a long time to settle down, but he played to top form after the interval. Lowe, if inclined to take liberties at times was a strong and resourceful pivot while Cruickshank came out of the game with credit.
Williams led the attack skilfully. He was always dangerous when in possession, and gave Nicholson a trying time.
Bremner showed improvement on recent displays, and took his goals well. Pattillo was quieter than usual but he schemed cleverly. McCall on the left proved that he is a winger of considerable ability but he should have been given more to do. Miller on the right had one of his best games.
In a United defence which was always at the stretch. Clark, Jack McCeachie and Nicholson were best. but the forward line did not impress.
