Unfortunately for the game, rain began to fall heavily as soon as the ball was kicked off. The visiting forwards were soon making for the home goal, and Hanlon and Dowds with the other home defenders had no easy task in beating off the Aberdeen attack. The left wing was especially dangerous. Play for the first quarter of an hour consisted of close attacking on the part of Aberdeen. After a loving and open chance to go past, Neilson, by a clever effort, Pete Hanlon and scored easily. The Athletic forwards made progress after this, but it was left to chambers, the home centre-half, to essay the first real attempt at scoring.
Law had an easy chance to equalise, but instead of running in, he tried a long shot on the run, which Greig easily dealt with. Noon also threw away a chance when close in. Open played ruled for a while. Brown broke away in the height of an Aberdeen attack, and it looked as if he would get through on his own, but Hannah brought his progress to an abrupt termination.
A foul followed, of course, but it also brought safety to the visitors. Placing was of a rather ragged characters till the interval, the wet grass and ball contributing largely to this state of matters.

The first 5 minutes of the second half so some lively play. Brown, the Athletic left winger, capped a tricky bit of work by a cleverly-taken equalising goal, but Aberdeen replied with just as nicely a taken goal by Campbell, as the result of an individual effort. Honours were fairly equal for a while, although a much better understanding prevailed among the visitors.
