One of the best of the local matches of the season took place at the Victoria Bridge Recreation Grounds between the Victoria United and the East End (Dundee). The result was disappointing, but the play throughout was above the average. Victoria United in the first period had decidedly the best of their opponents, whose goal more than once was only kept intact by the splendid defensive powers of the East End back division and the marked ability of their custodian. The ground men combined and dribbled well, but were invariably unfortunate at close quarters. The strangers, on the other hand, were slack in their movements, and practically displayed no combination whatever. Towards the end of the first forty-five they improved somewhat, and in a well-directed attack Haxton was successful in lowering the colours of the Vics. Crossing over, the pace was made very fast by the Dundonians, so fast indeed that the local eleven soon got exhausted, the result being that no fewer than three points were registered in quick succession. The Victoria after a time rallied, and put in a deal of smart work. They ought to have scored twice before they actually did. To Watson fell the honour of scoring the only goal they secured. The match ended in a win for the East End by 4 goals to 1. Turner played smartly; Watson also, though he made several mistakes, put in good work; and Ririe maintained his high reputation. Cannon was a success at goal. The centre for-ward, Salmond at back, and the goalkeeper were first-class men.
