match report 1890-91 fixture list
Orion 1 - 2 Broughty Ferry
Kick Off:    Andrews       Dargie, Anderson
Attendance: 0
Venue: Central Park, Aberdeen
A large number of spectators witnessed this match at the Central Park, though the soft ground and the inclement weather combined to make it somewhat uninteresting. During the first twenty minutes or so both goals were visited, but owing to the fore-mentioned causes, accurate shooting was out of the question, and neither team had any difficulty in clearing their lines. The Broughty Ferry men went in pretty much for long kicks, which, in the circumstances was, perhaps, the safer game. Half an hour had gone without any tangible result, when, during one of their spurts, Dargie, of the Broughty Ferry, scored the first goal with a long shot, which the custodian, with a little effort, might have kept out. Orion for some time after had the best of the game, and on two occasions they experienced hard lines in not scoring. With a rush the strangers broke away, and, getting within shooting distance, Anderson, with a low, swift shot, put on the second goal. Half-time was called shortly after.
Like their opponents, the Orion appeared to play best up the hill. They started the second half with great dash, and had several tries at goal, but Hampton, the Broughty goalkeeper, was always equal to the occasion, and saved his charge splendidly. The remainder of the game was played in a torrent of rain and in semi-darkness. Orion continued to be most aggressive, but it was not until within five minutes of the call of time that their efforts were rewarded - Andrews then heading the ball between the posts. They tried hard to equalise, but without avail, and Broughty Ferry were returned victors by 2 goals to 1.
