match report 1890-91 fixture list
Victoria United 1 - 9 East Stirling
Kick Off:
Attendance: 0
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
These teams met at the Victoria Bridge Grounds yesterday. There was a large holiday crowd, and the play from beginning to end was of the most pleasant character. The strangers lost the toss and kicked off, and immediately the centre forward (a grand man) rushed the bill down and scored. In subsequent play, the Victoria United several times broke away and got to close quarters, principally through the exertions of Turner on the right, but the defence of the Stirlingshire men was too effective, and the local lads failed to score. The principal feature of the first half was the fine combined play of the south team, and before half-time they had added four goals to their score. The Vics, succeeded only once, through Watson, in getting between the uprights, the match thus standing, when the whistle blew at half-time: East Stirlingshire 5 goals, Victoria United 1 goal.
In the last half the play was more even, and the Victoria United, albeit they were collectively too weak for their opponents, did some really good work. Twice at anyrate they had the hardest of lines in not scoring. The strangers were a powerful lot, and in combination and clever passing they made the finest display seen for some time in the city. The game ended: East Stirlingshire 9, Victoria United 1.
