Victoria United 2 - 4 Mossend Swifts
Kick Off:    Leggat 2       Mackie, Howieson, Boyd, ?
Attendance: 0
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
To-day, the football enthusiasts of Aberdeen will be treated to a match which ought to create interest. Taking advantage of the close season the Victoria United have booked as their opening guests the Mossend Swifts, a team who make their presence felt wherever they go. They come with a great reputation, being winners of Edinburgh Shield, 1887-88; winners of King's Cup, 1886-87-88; winners of Rosebery Cup, 1888-89. The Victoria, with a much stronger team than last year, are confident of about holding their own against their heavy and formidable opponents. The prospects of this year look very bright indeed for the Victoria, both as regards their fixtures and their team, which promises to be an unusually strong one, a few new names having been booked.

This important fixture - the first of the season - on the card of the local team was successfully brought off at the Victoria Grounds before a large "gate." The weather, if anything, was rather warm from a player's standpoint. Owing to the heavy traffic on the south trains, the arrival of the Mossend men was delayed for nearly two hours, and the large crowd at times showed signs of impatience.

The Victoria centre kicked off, and foul was granted. Howieson charged for the strangers, but Duffus smartly relieved, and Gloag transferred the ball to the Mossend territory, where Duffus sent it behind. A fruitless corner followed, and then Sinclair failed to improve on a very easy chance to score for the local men. Another corner was shortly conceded in a few minutes. Gloag headed the ball to Leggat, who sent it neatly through with his head, amid cheers, thus scoring the first goal of the match for the Victoria. Howieson immediately got away with the leather in fine style for the Mossend, but sent it over the bar with his head. The Victoria again attacked, and after getting a couple of corners which proved resultless, a scrimmage took place in which Gloag and Leggat were conspicuous, and a second rime the sphere was forced through. Leggat again charged the Mossend goal, and just failed to score, and after this some desultory play ensued. The first goal for the strangers was smartly taken by Mackie in a scrimmage. The Mossend pressed the home defence during the latter portion of the period, but Cannon played capitally, and no more goals were scored till the sides were changed with the score standing: Victoria, 2; Mossend, 1.
The Swifts at once attacked on the resumption of play, but their repeated efforts to score were rendered abortive by the smartness of the custodian. The Victorias transferred play to the other end, but the charge was returned by Hamilton, and the Swifts were quickly swarming round the uprights of the United. A dangerous ball was sent back by Cannon, but Howieson took the leather neatly and sent a magnificent shot right through before Cannon could collect himself, thus equalising the scores. The Victorias had the play in hand for a short time, but were unable to break down the defence, and the strangers again getting away secured the leading point through Boyd, who scored with a beauty. From a throw in on the right a fourth goal fell to them a few minutes later. From this point till the close the Swifts had the play well in hand, but they failed to get any further advantage, mainly on account of the able defence of the Victoria custodian and backs. The final result therefore was:? Mossend Swifts, 4 ; Victoria United, 2 goals.
