Charity Cup Semi Final
23/04/1898

The Aberdeen 1 - 2 Orion
Kick Off:    Clark       Hogg, Leggat
Attendance: 0
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
Aberdeen and Orion decided their tie on Saturday in miserable weather. We were astonished to see so large a crowd present. The ground at the commencement was not so bad, but by the finish it was quite unplayable.
Good combined play was out of the question, and the game gradually turned into a display of individual work. Aberdeen scored in the opening period, Hogg went centre for Orion in the second half, and the change had effect.
At call of time the scores stood Orion 2, Aberdeen 1. The play at no time was of a very interesting description.

To-night (Thursday) the final will be played at Chanonry. It is a pity the final has to be decided on the Whites' pitch. The long distance from town means a big loss to the drawings.
Vics were agreeable to toss whether Cattofield or Torry should be selected, but the, Stripes insisted on neutral ground.
Over 63 has already been drawn at the charity ties. The clubs receive 7 per cent for expenses incurred - players wages, &c.

Aberdeen and Orion met in a Charity Cup tie at Victoria Bridge Grounds; and, despite the wretched weather conditions, there was a good attendance of spectators. The teams were as follows: Orion: Watson; Ross, Scott; Wilson, Low, Currie; Webster, Murphy, Barron. Leggat, Hogg. Aberdeen: Ritchie; John Davidson, McConnachie; James Mackie, Henderson, Thomson; Shiach, Gray, Clark, Linton, Livingston. Referee: Mr Black, Forfar, Aberdeen won the toss, and the Orion, kicking off towards the brickwork end, began the pressure, Ritchie being called upon to kick out in the first few seconds. Then the Whites had a look in, but the slippery nature of the ground enabled the Orion backs to relieve. End-to-end play followed, but the Orion continued to have the best of the opening exchanges. Then the Whites pressed on the right through Livingston, and a well-directed shot compelled Watson to fist over the bar. Play hovered in the Stripes' quarters, and Shiach sent in a good shot, which Watson fisted out; but Livingston meeting the ball, banged it against the off-post, and Clark catching it on the rebound, scored the first goal for Aberdeen, Watson having no chance to save. From the restart, the ball continued to remain in the Orion quarters, but nothing resulted, and half-time arrived with the score standing: Aberdeen, 1; Orion, 0.

On resuming, play hovered in midfield for a spell, but Orion eventually assumed the aggressive. The game continued to be contested forcibly, and fouls were frequent. The Orion, however, had the best of the exchanges; and, scoring twice through Hogg and Leggat, won by 2 goals to 1.
