Victoria United/Orion Select 1 - 1 The Aberdeen
    Striking Joiners Benefit
Kick Off:
Attendance: 0
Venue: Wellington Bridge Grounds, Aberdeen
Yesterday the usual mass meeting of the men was held in Silver Street Hall. There was a large attendance, and Mr John Wisely presided. The business was conducted in private. Communications were received from two employers in town who expressed a desire to have their men back at the old terms. It was resolved to defer consideration of these communications. The various phases of the situation were discussed, but no new suggestions were made as to bringing the dispute to a close. It was intimated that the work in connection with Altyre House, Forres, belonging to Sir William Gordon-Cumming, had been withdrawn from Messrs Macandrew, Loch Street, and that Sir William had employed the man who was foreman at the work previous to the strike to engage hands to have the work at the house carried out. The foreman in question, it was reported, was offering 8d per hour. The meeting, however, decided that the job was a strike one, and, seeing that it had been commenced previous to the dispute, resolved that if any of their number accepted work at Altyre House they would be acting against the interests of the trade in Aberdeen.

At half-past six in the evening the men assembled in Golden Square to the number of about 400, and after being marshalled in processional order, marched by Union Street and Market Street to the Wellington Grounds on the Reclaimed Land to witness a football match between a team of the Victoria United and a combined team of the Aberdeen and Orion Clubs, given in behalf of the strike funds. The men carried torches, and were preceded by a couple of pipers, who blew a merry chant. The unusual sight attracted a good deal of attention, but the proceedings were orderly. The Wellington Grounds were illuminated by the electric light, and the match was witnessed by a great number of spectators.
