The succession of Premier Reserve League victories mentioned earlier came to an abrupt and calamitous end in a 6-1 defeat against Rangers at Pittodrie on the Saturday before Christmas.
In Teddy Scott's assessment, this was the best Rangers reserve side the young Dons had come up against for several seasons, and much of their success was due to former Don Dave Dodds, but Teddy was also vexed by the way the Aberdeen team gifted the visitors most of their goals. The Ibrox side were 4-0 up at the interval and all four goals were preventable, springing from long balls through the middle of the home defence. It was a day when too many Aberdeen players were below their normal expected performance.
There was a second-half improvement when Thomson was replaced by Jamie McCarron, who played in midfield to allow Craig Robertson to move into central defence. Rangers, however, added another goal before Colin McRonald, who had been substituted for the injured Andy Roddie five minutes before the interval, took one back for the young Dons with three minutes to go.
The Pittodrie rout was complete when Rangers brought their tally to six thanks to an "own goal" by Ian Downie, rough luck on a youngster who otherwise had an excellent game. Downie and fellow full back Stephen McAnespie - two of the youngest players in the side - were Aberdeen's best players in a day of disappointment.
