Things Looking Up

Aberdeen's Premier Reserve League record took on a healthier complexion last weekend thanks to a welcome 1-0 victory over St Johnstone at Pittodrie - their second win in succession and only their third in twelve outings in this competition.
Narrow though the winning margin was, taking both points was nevertheless a creditable performance considering that it was achieved under the handicap of the early loss of goalkeeper Michael Watt.
With only 23 minutes played, the under-21 international 'keeper received a head knock in collision and although he resumed briefly, his vision was affected and he had to be taken off.
With Kenny Gilbert called from the substitutes bench, Ian Downie took over the 'keeper's jersey and, despite his lack of height, turned in a competent display, including a couple of good saves. The rest of the young Dons' defence, too, played their part, particularly Gary Smith and Neil Cooper, in giving the stopgap 'keeper adequate protection.
Saints had chances early in the game, but the home defence was further tightened by a tactical exchange of roles in which Graham Watson dropped back to full back with Graeme Ferguson switching to midfield - a change which seemed to benefit both players.
Andy Gibson maintained his remarkable record of scoring consistently by snatching the decisive goal eight minutes after the interval.
The former Stirling Albion striker has now scored eleven goals in his ten Premier Reserve League outings, failing to score in only two of these games. His overall tally in reserve team football this season is 18 goals and he has drawn a blank only five times in his 17 appearances.
