The young Dons provided further evidence of a growing maturity at the weekend when they continued their return to winning vein in the Premier Reserve League with a 3-1 victory over Falkirk at Brockville. This boosted Aberdeen's recent points haul to twelve in their last six league outings - after only collecting six points in their first ten games!
As Willie Miller points out, however, the Pittodrie side still have much to learn. At Falkirk, for example, after scoring twice in the first six minutes with simple, direct football, they indulged in over-elaboration, and they were also guilty of passing-up good scoring chances later in the game. These faults apart, coach Miller was reasonably happy with the overall performance - "provided" he adds, "the players learn from their mistakes."
In the absence of Michael Watt, on first-team goalkeeping duty, Derek Stillie made his first Premier Reserve League appearance of the season and turned in a competent display, while first-team members Gregg Watson, Brian Grant and Willem Van Der Ark made good use of this opportunity to renew their challenges for top team places.
Van Der Ark contributed in the build up to Jamie McCarron's opening goal in the 4th minute and claimed the second himself two minutes later. Ian Downie, partnering the tall Dutchman as striker, provided the third with a spectacular 25-yard shot following a corner in 39 minutes. The young Dons' lead could have been widened even further on several occasions before Falkirk's consolation goal came just before the final whistle.
