Div 1 (Old)
Dumbarton scorers: Walker 3, walker 15, McDiarmid 43, Walker 65

10/01/1920 | KO:

The match at Boghead between Dumbarton and Aberdeen was one of the poorest seen there for some time. From the beginning the Aberdeen team were outclassed, and when they did attack Dumbarton's defence was always secure. Walker scored three goals, two in the first half and one near the finish. McDermid added the fourth for Dumbarton. Aberdeen did not score, and missed two good chances. Thom excelled in the home attack.

Aberdeen sustained their heaviest reverse of the season at Boghead, where Dumbarton beat them in a Scottish League match by 4 goals to 0. On a wintry afternoon there were only 3000 spectators, and the match was played on a heavy ground. Thus the score indicates, Aberdeen had decidedly the worst of the argument, and although they came away strongly at periods in the second half, when the breeze was behind them, they never impressed. On two occasions Connon shot wide from good positions, but the Dumbarton defenders were always more than a match for the strenuous if badly-conceived and ill-executed efforts of the Pittodrie forwards. Following a miss by Hume and near midfield, walker put Dumbarton on the lead in 3 minutes after clever work by Duncan and Bennett. Keeping up the pressure, walker increased his team's lead with a cleverly-taken goal at the end of 15 minutes. Wylie had a good tries for Aberdeen, but before the interval McDiarmid followed up the ball miss headed by Hume, and increased Dumbarton street to three.

Aberdeen made great efforts to reduce the leeway in the second half, but they were weak at close quarters, and could make little headway against a resourceful and sound defence. After 20 minutes, fine work by Thom, which culminated in his centring to Walker, enabled the centre-forward to put Dumbarton further ahead. Aberdeen were plucky right up to the end, but they were well beaten in a match in which the score cannot be said to do them an injustice.,/P. The outstanding players on the Dumbarton side were McGrory, O'Connell, Scott, Bennett, Walker, and Thom; and in a disappointing exhibition Anderson, Robertson, Wright, and Connon were best for Aberdeen.
