Aberdeen 1 - 1 Motherwell

HT Score: Aberdeen 0 - 1 Motherwell

Div 1 (Old)
Aberdeen scorers: Wilson 75.
Motherwell scorers: Ferrier

01/05/1920 | KO:

Motherwell only succeeded in getting a draw at Pittodrie Park, but, on play, they deserved to come out winners, until the last fifteen minutes of the game, when, after Wilson, inside left, had equalised, Aberdeen showed to much greater advantage. The only goal of the first period, when Aberdeen was chiefly on the defensive, was obtained by Ferrier, Motherwell's outside left, eighteen minutes from the start.

Aberdeen's League wind-up with Motherwell at Pittodrie was a rather tame affair, which resulted in a draw, each team scoring once. Motherwell's goal came along at the end of fifteen minutes, when Ferguson, the visitors' centre forward, got the better of Hannah in a tussle, and sent the ball across the goal for Ferrier to net on the run. Subsequently, there was considerable mid-field play, in which Motherwell's work revealed a rare understanding between the middle and front lines. They were not over-penetrative, however, and Anderson did not have much cause for concern in the opening period. Through the medium of their extreme wingers, and Yule in particular, Aberdeen often reached the visiting defence, but they were weakly served in the inside positions, and several likely chances went abegging. Anderson's best saves in the period were from Ferguson, who had a clever shot on the run, and from Rankin, the keeper tipping the last-named's effort over the bar for a flag kick. Had Motherwell's finishing been up to the high standard of their midfield work, they must have established a commanding lead by the time the interval came along, for the Aberdeen halves and backs, with the exception of Wright, were not at all convincing, and had it not been for the free use of the one back game matters must have gone badly with them.

Wilson's Equaliser.

With the wind in their favour in the second half there came a slight Aberdeen improvement, but never any time did their work compare favourably with that the visitors. Several likely chances were lost, even although the Motherwell goal was rather fortunate to escape downfall. Rundell distinguished himself when out of his goal by effecting a clever overhead save from Wylie, and later Connon was presented with practically an open goal when he squared, McGregor, the Motherwell right back, miskicking and almost putting through his own goal. Anderson had some clever saves from Rankin, Ferguson, Gardiner, and Ferris, and just when Motherwell promised to increase their lead, 15 minutes from time. Aberdeen got level. Brown, the visitors' centre-half, who played a strong game throughout, miskicked on the 18 yards line, and before he could recover Wilson shot into the net out of Rundell's reach. The closing stages of the game were more vigorously contested than any preceding period, both teams going all out for the winning goal. Rundell finely saved a free kick taken by Hannah, and both defences were well tried, but full time arrived without any addition to the score, which did Justice to both teams on the run of the play. Best for Aberdeen were Anderson, Hannah. Wright, Yule, Archibald and Wilson, and for Motherwell McGregor, Brown. Rankine, and Gardiner. Attendance, 10,000.
