These teams met on the ground of the former on Saturday afternoon in a Northern League fixture. Excellent weather prevailed, and consequently large numbers of spectators wended their way towards Links Park. Both teams were at full strength, and a fast and exciting game was predicted. The teams lined up as follows: Aberdeen: Bisset; Mackie, Skene; Cameron, Henderson, Black; Livingston, Mackay, Fullarton, Grey, Shiach. Montrose: W. Allan; G. Allan, Sharp; Lamb, Irvine, Arbuthnott; Smith, Ogg, Ferrier, Inglis, Jackson. Mr Nicol, of Arbroath, acted as referee. Montrose won the toss, and played towards the east goal with a slight breeze in their favour. At the outset the Aberdeen eleven pressed, but were latterly driven back. Ten minutes from the start Montrose were very unfortunate to lose the services of Sharp, the left back. Arbuthnott took his place, and worked well. Shiach had a splendid run down the field, and scored from a very difficult position. Shortly afterwards Livingstone scored the second goal for Aberdeen. A penalty kick was awarded the Montrose for an infringement by Skene, and Ferrier succeeded in notching the first goal for Montrose. Shortly afterwards Black added another point to the Aberdeen's total from a corner kick. The half-time whistle blew with the scorer standing: Aberdeen, 3; Montrose, 1.
On resuming, a penalty kick was awarded Aberdeen, and Mackie scored. Despite the rather discouraging circumstances the Montrose lads were subject to, they played with a will, and they were successful in adding another goal to their total. Later Fullarton scored a goal from a pass from Shiach. The Montrose were pressing hard when the whistle blew, and they had to cross the field beaten by 5 goals to 2.
