The Aberdeen 1 - 3 Dundee A

Northern League
The Aberdeen scorers: J. Mackie (pen)
Dundee A scorers: McBean (o.g.), Gilligan, Gilligan

25/10/1902 | KO:

AT Pittodrie Park the Aberdeen and Dundee A teams met in a Northern League fixture. Notwithstanding the counter attraction at Cattofield, there was a good attendance. The teams were:- Aberdeen: McBean; Walker, Ross; J. Mackie, Murphy, Drummond; C. Mackie, Breslin, Singers, Taylor, Paterson. Dundee A: Murray; Bonthrone, Jeffray; Halkett, S. Robertson, Gowans; Moir, McNiff, S. Gilligan, Wilson, Neil. Mr. Riddle, Hearts of Beath, was referee.

Dundee commenced briskly, and Moir tested MacBean with a stiff shot in the first minute of the game. MacBean got the ball, but let it slip through his fingers into the net. Annoyed at this early revers, the homesters now assumed the aggressive, but the Dundee defence withstood the pressure, and ultimately got the ball out of danger. Once more Aberdeen got into close quarters, and Paterson, accepting a pass from Murphy, banged the ball safely into the net. For some reason, however, the referee declared the ball offside. A spell of end-to-end play followed, and Aberdeen had several times hard lines in not scoring. Bonthrone, who is well known for his sometimes too robust style of play, fouled Paterson, and the homesters were awarded a penalty. J. Mackie took the kick, and easily found the net.

On resuming both teams strove for the lead, and Bonthrone's questionable tactics in defending, were severely criticised. As a result of some fine passing, Gilligan dribbled the ball smartly past Ross, and scored with a fast shot. Soon afterwards the same player again distinguished himself by scoring a third goal for Dundee. Aberdeen now made strenuous efforts to reduce the lead, but failed, and Dundee ran out victors after an exciting struggle.
